The Treaty of York (1237)

Mit dieser Vereinbarung wurden die wiederholten Ansprüche der schottischen Könige auf die drei nördlichsten Grafschaften Englands aufgegeben. Als Gegenleistung erhielten sie Ländereien innerhalb der besagten Grafschaften.

The said Alexander, king of Scots, remitted and quit-claimed for himself and his heirs to the said Henry, king of England, and his heirs in perpetuity the said earldoms of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmoreland [and fifteen thousand merks of silver which King John, father of Henry, received from William, former king of Scots, father of Alexander, for certain agreements entered upon between the said kings which were not observed by King John, as Alexander, king of Scotland, says, and all agreements made about marriages between Henry, king of England, or Richard, his brother, and Margaret or Isabella, sisters of the said Alexander, king of Scotland]. In return for this remission and quitclaim the said Henry, king of England, gave and granted to the said Alexander, king of Scots, two hundred librates of land within the said earldoms of Northumberland and Cumberland if the said two hundred librates can be found in these earldoms outside towns where castles are situated, and, if any is lacking, it shall be made upon in suitable places nearest the said earldoms of Northumberland and Cumberland; to be had, held and retained in demesne by the said Alexander, king of Scots, and his heirs the kings of Scots, of the said Henry, king of England, and his heirs at Carlisle, whoever he may be, on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, for all services, customs and other demands which might be exacted for the same lands....
And the said king of Scots has done his homage for these lands to the said king of England, and has sworn fealty to him.
